FAQ

What is Lithistone?

Lithistone is a magnesium-based eco-ceramic-cement that is roughly twice as strong as high strength Portland cement and has 1/20 of the embodied energy. Lithistone is an environmentally-friendly, non-toxic cast stone medium that can be used in place of concrete, tile, natural stone and porcelain.

Does Lithistone have glass in it?

Glass is optional in Lithistone products. As a custom specification, Lithistone can be stretched with over 75% locally recycled glass to create terrazzo-type products. Glass color schemes are available upon request.

Can building projects receive LEED points for using Lithistone?

Yes. Depending on the selected Lithistone finish, our products contain between 25% and 75% recycled and post-industrial waste that allows for eligibility for LEED points from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

What products do you fabricate with Lithistone?

Lithistone products include custom vessel sinks, integral countersinks, troughs, tables, countertop slabs, pedestals, bath tubs, shower floor pans, tiles, fountains and other architectural pre-cast accents. Other decorative products include platters, vases, bowls, planters, and sculpture.

Does Lithistone require maintenance?

Lithistone products will require maintenance, depending on the particular application. All Lithistone products are sold sealed and waxed. Continual waxing every few months is recommended to keep them in top shape. Re-sealing of the products may be necessary depending on regular care, every five to ten years. Re-sealing is easy, inexpensive and can be done by the homeowner.

Will Lithistone patina?

Lithistone will patina over time. This natural movement of age, pigmentation, and surface variations is one of the desirable and alluring characteristics of cast stone counters and sinks. To many, cast stone countertops become more beautiful over time. This patina may become more prevalent with certain colors, and if the surfaces are rarely maintained. However, if the patina should ever become too intense over time, Lithistone can be re-polished and brought back to an unscathed finish.

Can Lithistone be stained as a kitchen surface?

Lithistone is a durable and resilient building medium, and most stains can be easily lifted out of Lithistone products. However, certain acidic substances found in the kitchen will etch the surface if left to sit on the stone. Balsamic vinegar, lemon juice and other acidic ingredients, if not wiped up, will penetrate through the sealer and wax to leave an etch mark on the stone that can only be removed by spot polishing.

Is Lithistone ideal for bathroom sinks and surfaces?

Yes. Few materials can match the functional, luxurious and tactile presence of Lithistone as a bathroom product. Endless shapes, colors and textural variations are possible to create bathrooms with innovative features, and timeless appeal.
